Little Doctors

Our health and nutrition unit is finishing this week! I can't believe how much fun we are having in our homeschool days. Our favorite lesson this week is another topic that is near and dear to our family. Part of being healthy is going to your doctor for a checkup!  This topic is so dear to us because my husband is a doctor in his residency here in California. He graduated from medical school last year and we moved from Oregon to California for one year of residency. We will be moving to Georgia in June to complete the rest of his residency to become an Ophthalmologist (eye surgeon).

The training process to become a doctor has made up a huge part of our lives, and the kids are very familiar with this part of healthy living.  We had so much fun!

The first activity we did during our "circle time" in the day. The kids always love to make lists during this part of the lesson, so we made a list of the different parts of the body the doctor checks. We then sang the song in the directions. So cute!

We combined a couple activities here, our make and play project integrated very well with our steam station this day. They made their own little doctor kits and got to play "doctor" with their stuffed animals. We play "doctor" often in this house, so this concept was not new, but still SO fun! We took this time to talk about the different kinds of doctors we see from cardiologists, emergency doctors, family doctors, pediatricians, and ophthalmologists. The kids knew more than I realized!

The next activity was perfect for Jonathan! We have been working really hard on the fine motor skills required for writing his letters and cutting paper, so it was fun for me to see growth in this part of his education. I noticed he handled his scissors better this time than he ever has. He noticed too and said, "I did it this time, Mom!" So cute!

 The domino activity was so cute and made me realize I need to buy some real dominoes because the kids had so much fun playing this game. I definitely needed to supervise Hope as she needed some help understanding, but Jonathan caught on very quickly. We counted all the dominoes at the end to include a tiny bit of math. We also took this opportunity to count by twos to include the pictures with our counting.

As I was preparing this blog post, I realized that I haven't shown you all the entire "teacher page" in the planning book. The lessons by Mother Goose Time are so creative and written in an easy, "at a glance" way. And the BEST part is, they send it all to my door! So great! Thank you, Mother Goose Time!
